They buy relations, stories, and magic.\u201d \u2013 <em>Seth Godin<\/em><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember60\">And no one is better positioned to create those relationships, stories, and that sense of magic than the people inside the company \u2013 employees who show up authentically, share what they believe in, and speak from experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember61\">As a professor, researcher, and founder of a company dedicated to personal branding, I often reflect on how deeply our professional identity influences not only how others see us, but how we see ourselves. Over the past decade, I\u2019ve helped hundreds of companies and professionals <strong>find and express their voice<\/strong>. But perhaps the most fascinating part of this journey has been discovering just how transformative that visibility can be \u2013 <strong>not just for the individual, but for the organization they represent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember62\">A few years ago, together with several colleagues, I conducted two research studies that looked at this phenomenon from different angles. One explored how employees who share content on LinkedIn shape perceptions of their company through their personal voice. The other examined how organizational leaders craft personal brands on social media, and how this influences organizational trust and image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember63\"><strong>What we found was powerful.<\/strong> When people speak authentically about their work, it has ripple effects \u2013 both on their own careers and on their companies\u2019 brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Why employee advocacy is more than just a buzzword<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember65\">You\u2019ve probably heard the term \u201cemployee ambassador\u201d or \u201cemployee advocacy\u201d floating around. &nbsp;At its core, being an ambassador means showing up \u2013 openly, publicly, and purposefully \u2013 for the work you do and the values you believe in. And when you do that, people don\u2019t just see the company. They see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember66\">Our study on employee advocacy, conducted with LinkedIn users, revealed that employees who post valuable and credible content build parasocial relationships \u2013 those one-sided but psychologically meaningful bonds we form with media figures or online personalities. These bonds increase trust and connection. <strong>And here\u2019s the twist: they also influence how people feel about the company the employee represents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember67\"><strong>In simpler terms: when people like and trust you, they\u2019re more likely to like and trust your employer, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember68\">This is good news for organizations. But it\u2019s also great news for individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>What\u2019s in it for me? Visibility, credibility, opportunity<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember70\">During interviews for our study on leader branding, we spoke with executives and entrepreneurs across Lithuania who regularly communicate on LinkedIn. Many described how sharing their professional journey enhanced their reputation, attracted new business, and opened up unexpected opportunities \u2013 from keynote invitations to career shifts and international partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember71\">One leader shared, \u201cPersonal branding is like a psychological game that showcases you as a successful professional. When people remember your name, they remember your expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember72\">Another described it more simply: \u201cIt\u2019s a visual CV. People see my growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember73\">The common thread? It wasn\u2019t about showing off \u2013 it was about showing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember74\">I often remind my students and clients that personal branding isn\u2019t reserved for influencers or extroverts. It\u2019s about shaping your professional narrative so others can understand your strengths, values, and contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember75\">When done intentionally, it helps you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get noticed for your ideas, not just your title<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build influence in your field<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attract roles or projects aligned with your aspirations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthen your network with meaningful connections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop communication skills and confidence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember77\">Most importantly, it helps you own your story\u2014before someone else tells it for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Why does it matter to companies?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember79\">Let\u2019s be clear: employee advocacy isn\u2019t about turning your people into megaphones for corporate messaging. It\u2019s about unlocking the authentic, trusted voices that already exist inside your organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember80\">Our research showed that leaders who consistently build personal brands not only elevate themselves but also humanize their organizations. In a world where consumers and jobseekers are increasingly skeptical of corporate-speak, employees are seen as more relatable and trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember81\">And when they share stories, lessons, or even questions from their professional lives, the brand becomes more than a logo. It becomes human. Credible. Real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember82\">This creates measurable value:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased reach and engagement of brand messages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved reputation and employer brand perception<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher-quality job applicants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stronger internal culture and connection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember84\"><strong>But here&#8217;s the catch: this only works when employees are empowered, not pressured. Authenticity can\u2019t be manufactured. And trust can\u2019t be delegated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember85\">That\u2019s why the best organizations focus not on controlling the message, but on cultivating the environment where people feel safe and inspired to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>So how do you start showing up?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember87\">If you\u2019re an employee or leader wondering where to begin, remember: you don\u2019t need to be a social media expert to be effective. Start small. Start real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember88\"><strong><em>Here are a few practical ways to dip your toes into employee ambassadorship:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember89\"><strong>1. Document, don\u2019t just promote<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember90\">Post about what you\u2019re learning, building, solving, or reflecting on. A lesson from a recent client meeting, a challenge you overcame, or a quote that sparked a thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember91\"><strong>2. Make it personal, not private<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember92\">You don\u2019t need to share your whole life. But let your personality show. Write the way you speak. Connect your experience to broader themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember93\"><strong>3. Be consistent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember94\">You don\u2019t have to post every day. But showing up regularly builds recognition and trust over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember95\"><strong>4. Ask yourself: what would I want to read?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember96\">Avoid the polished press release tone. Be human. Be helpful. Be reflective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>What companies can do to support their ambassadors<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember100\">When it comes to employee advocacy, companies play a critical role \u2013not by directing the message, but by creating the environment in which authentic voices can thrive. The goal is not to turn employees into marketers, but to <strong>enable them to speak confidently and genuinely about their work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember101\"><strong>Model the behavior through leadership.<\/strong> When leaders communicate openly\u2014sharing insights, lessons, and team achievements \u2013 it signals that visibility is encouraged. It helps normalize professional communication as a part of everyday work, not just an exception reserved for executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember102\"><strong>Offer guardrails, not scripts.<\/strong> Companies should provide practical guidance on brand values, tone, and communication etiquette \u2013but leave room for individuality. People are far more likely to engage when they feel trusted to speak in their own voice, not simply echo corporate messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember103\"><strong>Recognize and celebrate engagement.<\/strong> Employees who take initiative \u2013 whether through thoughtful posts, active engagement, or behind-the-scenes support \u2013 should be acknowledged. Recognition helps build momentum and reinforces a culture of shared communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember104\"><strong>Frame visibility as a professional growth skill.<\/strong> Advocacy should be positioned as part of personal and career development. Communicating one\u2019s ideas, sharing expertise, and building a visible presence are increasingly important skills \u2013not only for the organization\u2019s benefit but for the employee\u2019s long-term growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember105\">Research shows that <strong>when employees are encouraged to be visible and are supported in sharing their perspectives, advocacy becomes organic<\/strong>. And when that happens, it creates real value for both the individual and the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Final thought: this is bigger than one post<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember107\">Being visible at work \u2013 online or offline- &nbsp;isn\u2019t about vanity. It\u2019s about alignment. When your values, your actions, and your voice come together, you attract the right opportunities, people, and possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember108\">So ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do I want to be known for?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What impact am I already making?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I share that in a way that helps others see it, too?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember110\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember111\"><strong>Because it\u2019s not just a job.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember112\"><strong>It\u2019s a story. A platform.
